Dmax

Hi

"Tbl_Bks_1c_ID" is an autonumber field for the table "Tbl_Bks_1c_SubCharpters"

So if I have a text field with the Dmax formula below in the Control Source property. I assumed the formula should work, but it doesn't. All I get for a return is #Error.

Can you help?

Mike Albert

=DMax("Tbl_Bks_1c_ID","Tbl_Bks_1c_SubCharpters")

Just to confirm the spelling is right? Charpter

You have a lot of symbols there, have you tried with brackets?

=DMax("[Tbl_Bks_1c_ID]","[Tbl_Bks_1c_SubCharpters]")

That's one of the reasons why I only use letters and numbers in my field and table names. Avoid underscores, hyphens, and all those characters. I try to make it so that a field name makes sense to someone else who's looking at the database and doesn't know what my fields are, and I look at yours and I'm like, "What is that? LOL"

Thanks Richard, If you think that's bad you should have seen what I was doing before I started your courses.

I have one more question. If I concat Two fields with a space in the middle like [Tbl_Bks_Field1] & " " & [ Tbl_Bks_field2] in a control source of a control on a form, it displays "125 05" as I want it to. However the table never gets updated because I assume I messed with the original control source. How to I update the table with the value I want? Note, this field is used to join a "Books" table to a "Chapters" table.

Why do you want to store that value in the table if you are already storing the two pieces? Just use a query to create the value for you to display it where you need to.

Thanks Adam, excellent point. You've given me a lot to think about because the app. I'm working on joins up to 6 tables at the deepest point but it would save me a lot of typing in the end.

Yeah, like Adam says, there's no reason to store data that can be calculated on the fly. And Michael, trust me, I've seen much, much worse than this. LOL.
