Averaging Various Fields
Moe

Hello,
I have an MS Access 2007 database and form which is quite simple.  I have a list of individuals and their scores (i.e. 3.2, 2.2, 4.1) on various objectives (i.e. proficiency, speed, comfort etc.).  The scores fields are all formatted as single and fixed with one decimal place.  The scores are in various fields (not in one column that I could easily avg or sum with a click).  So, I added a text box at the bottom to average all the scores and tried to write an expression to average the numbers.  After trying various ways to write the expression and coming up with various errors, I finally got the correct answer with:

=Avg([Field1]+[Field2]+[Field3]+[Field4])/4

The only way I could get the expression to work was by counting the number of fields I was averaging and dividing by tthat number (4).  Is there a smarter way to do this?

Thank you for your time and assistance.

p.s.  I'm fairly new to the updated version of Access and VBA yet fairly proficient.

Reply from Richard Rost:

Not really. Unlike Excel where you can work with a RANGE of cells, in Access you're dealing with discrete fields. So the only way to average up 4 fields would be to set the ControlSource equal to:

(Field1+Field2+Field3+Field4)/4

Sorry there isn't a better way to do this. Now if you were dealing with multiple RECORDS that you have to average up, then you could use the domain aggregate functions like DSUM and DCOUNT to create an average.
