Preview report problem
Len Jolly

Hi Richard
I have several databases that have been working perfectly for years. Now every time I try to preview a report I get a connecting to printer message, if I cancel this I get a runtime error 2501. If I cancel this message or stop the code running the preview works OK. Its the same in all my databases!

Hi Len,

If it is happening on all your DBs that eliminates code issues. Error 2501 is due to you cancelling the action.

What other changes to the printers, network, or software installations have happened lately?

Thanks for your prompt response. I have made no changes. This is a stand alone PC, no network, no software added. I use my main database on a daily basis and reports worked fine a couple of days ago. When this happened this morning I tried other databases and the same thing happened. I have just tried again, the message I get is headed waiting for printer connection, wait for connection or cancel. Oh! just discovered if I wait 5 mins and do nothing the preview appears. I am going to reboot and try again.

Reboot did not work. I found that having the printer on makes no difference. Time varies from 2 to 5 minutes to generate a preview, that can't be right. Once one preview has been generated all other previews work instantly until the DB has been started, then the problem comes back!

Have you tried compact & repair or anything else on the Troubleshooter?

Hi Len, switch to a different printer (such as "Microsoft Print to PDF" which comes with Windows) and see if it hangs the preview.  If it doesn't, then your printer may be the source of the problem.  Also try printing from another program, such as Word or Excel, to the printer to see if it hangs as well.

Good morning all, Adam I did not try compact & repair as it was on all my databases. I say was because Kevin hit the spot! I tried printing from word and found that it was set to "print to PDF". Looking at settings I unticked "Let windows select default printer" I must have recently printed a PDF and windows decided I always wanted to do that. The problem has gone away, many thanks for your help.
