Many to Many Group setup

Not sure how to put this in as little words as possible. I'll try doing this with a simple example. In a vehicle there is an alternator. This alternator has a Group number as it is made up of different parts, ie housing, bolts, fittings, etc. Each of those have a part number. Part Numbers and Group numbers all have a 7 digit format. So I would need to search in order to know if it's a group number or a part number. If it's a group number, what are the part numbers that make up that Group number. And to further complicate that, that group number (alternator) can be part of several other groups, ie engine group, electrical group. etc. Final proverbial spanner in the mix here is that the bolt mentioned earlier can work in so many groups, brands, models etc.

Just to elaborate a bit more on that
A Group Number is generally made up of a last of Part numbers, but there are cases where a group number can be made up of multiple other Group Numbers and in some instances even a combination of Group and Part Numbers if that makes any sense at all.

Hi Philip,

It is definitely doable. You need to watch the following videos first:
Access Relationship Seminar lessons 9-12.

It is all in the tables setup.
After you have watched these videos, and if you still need more help, we are happy to direct you.

That sounds unnecessarily complicated, and it sounds to me like one of those numbering strategies that was put together before everything was computerized. I see that a lot in old database systems where the first two characters represent this, the next three characters represent that, and so on. There's a lot of different ways you can handle this, and like Sami says, I do cover a lot with this kind of stuff in the relationship seminar. But without seeing some samples of your data, there's not a whole lot more I can add to the conversation.

Thank you very much Sami and Richard
So let me just start by saying I will most certainly be subscribing to the seminar and see if I can figure this out on my own.
Its not as simple where the characters represent in a logical sequence. I'd almost go as far as to say that the numbers are like ID's just adding up all the time. Initially it started with a 6 digit Part Number and when they were used up, became a 7 digit number
@Richard, I'll send you a sample of the data privately and I'll explain in the mail why (legal reasons)
