Linking tables prompting for passwords
Scott A

I am going to try to keep this brief. I am concluding that this problem with importing table links is likely a timing problem, or it has to do with dimming and clearing variables. (maybe a combo of both)

So here goes...

Background(one of the things I am using this for is tracking of controlled substances (I manage an ambulance service).

The flow goes:
UserName after_update:
connect to backend, look up username with sql, then display username I use the first name here, but plan on creating some kind of unique log on for each user (which will be in effect 2 passwords). Typing the actual username will get them nowhere. Then I close rs, db, and set to nothing (I think this is one of the things that is causing the problem) because this step works fine. It does not prompt for a password

So I create the links and open main menu(Prompts for a password, both when opening and when I click the button which calls the same module sub.)

I tried putting the call in several diffent events and got the same result.
Now throughout all of this, if I open the main menu manually, the buttons create the links without prompting for a password.

Finally, I just it into the on open for the log on form, and eureka....it works (Obviously defeating the purpose of hiding the tables in the first place.) The other thing is that the buttons work fine here too.

This is why I think it may have to do with timing of events. Any thoughts?

Reply from Richard Rost:

Perhaps it's a timing issue? You say it works manually when you open the form and click a button, but it doesn't work when you just open the form. Maybe you need to put a little DoEvents statement in there or a little timed pause to give the form a second to open before the connection is attempted. I'm guessing here... I've never encountered this problem before and without trying to recreate it on this end, I'm not sure how to fix it.
