Access Going Away

Who informed you?

They are going to discontinue MS Access every 6 months for the last 20 years. It is nonsense.

I think Sylvia meant to say that her EMPLOYER is discontinuing using Access in their workplace.

I am still personally learning PowerApps myself (just bought another book, in fact) but I'm not quite to the level of making any tutorials on it yet. However, I don't see PowerApps being a complete replacement for Access. It's nowhere near as powerful from what I see.

Can you make decent Apps with it? Sure. Is it as good as Access? Absolutely not.

Oh, and if my assumption is wrong - if someone told you MICROSOFT is discontinuing Access, like the guys said, absolutely NOT.

Thanks for your reactions and I'm sorry about the confusion. It's my employer discontinuing Access. And, as far as I can see from your posts, I'll not be happy about that...

I'm looking forward to potential upcoming lessons on Power Apps though. :) And, because Power Apps might not be able tot substitute my application, I'm also looking into alternatives, maybe with SQL server. Any ideas and advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd presume their subscription would still include Access, but I guess if IT won't "support" it then there's nothing you can do.

To answer the original question, to convert an Access app to a Power Apps app, all the code has to be rewritten because they are completely different coding environments.  Access uses VBA code, but all the code in Power Apps comprises of functions (see picture below).  Power Apps also doesn't use SQL statements at all.  All the data retrievals, filtering, updates, conditional processing, etc., are done via functions.

Power Apps resides entirely online.  All the designs and coding are done on web browsers.  The resulting apps can be run on web browsers on mobile apps.  Power Apps is also a subscription-based service that charges per user per month.  So unless online connectivity and multi-platform use are what you need, it is not worth the money.
