Oh, you are definitely not alone. In fact, one of the reasons I got involved in Access development in the first place was because way back in the 90s, when I started my computer consulting business, I had lots of customers tell me that they absolutely hated off-the-shelf accounting software like QuickBooks. However, software that was customized for their industry was outrageously expensive. So, I started building custom databases to meet that niche. There's definitely a market out there for better accounting software that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Usually, it's specific to industries, so there is no one-size-fits-all for everyone.

Nope not alone, as someone who has gone down the same path before though, i will warn you that quickbooks is surprisingly deep on reporting, and while you definitely can remake everything you might be surprised by how much there is if you use all the little reports/general journals/etc. in my case our accounting department are report junkies and it was overwhelming to remake all that stuff inside my time deadline. So i ended up getting qodbc which is a driver that basically can link access to quickbooks. I can make all my customers/invoices in access and it copies them into quickbooks. So my accounting people are still using it for reports, but i HATE the monopoly that quickbooks pretty much has, along with their new subscription and forced upgrades making you be the QA for their bugs. We used Quickbooks 13 for like 9 years, but you cant do that anymore, they force you to pay again.

My start in Databases was the opposite direction.  I designed a Database because my boss --- err my dad wasn't going to spend money on software.  I said... Daaad your paying a service that costs as much as.  Long story short I duplicated everything they did.  Much later on we moved to Quickbooks and quickly wished we hadn't.  I had to come back and clean the mess the book keeper did and try and make it for us.

I wanted to redo what I did and move to welll um a little program by a company from Microsoft and was told no.  I cry now about it.  Soooooo now jump 15 years from those days of QuickIck... I'm doing it again because it can be done.  This isn't going to be used by more than 6 people at most.

I recently worked with a single owner Machine Shop. The owner's wife used Quickbooks and they both realized it was overkill. I used a great deal of Richards work to create a nice little, simple invoicing and billing system that was very easy to maintain. We created the reports that they needed.  This custom system took a fraction of the time they were spending with Quickbooks, lowered the frustration level and reduced the cost to zero.

I work on QB & I simply can't stand it!!

But the nagging and crying FINALLY worked.  For 6 months we ran my reports against theirs.
And I HATED QuickBooks.  And now hate it more as I read they aren't doing New Desktop versions come the end of July this year.

It's easier for companies to support software "in the cloud" rather than releasing desktop software. You don't have to deal with a million different (sometimes problematic) PC configurations... just browser compatibility. So it's better FOR THEM. Which I get. I used to have a downloadable video player for my lessons. More trouble than it was worth. So much easier FOR ME to just put the videos online and play them in a browser.

It's only certain versions of QB being discontinued, in my case (enterprise) will still be made and available. I just had to call our QB rep, you about gave me a heart attack of all the work I was going to have to do in the next month LOL.

I am glad that I am not alone. You guys rock.

My boss (err wife) is all about accounting software that is simple and low to no cost (considering my Gold Membership and the soon to be purchased check book register seminar). She did ask... "Can the program (Access) run OK on a windows tablet?" Like a Surface Pro I'd imagine. Well, much to my chagrin Google has let me down.

Guy? Can MS Access run nicely on a windows tablet? (Please please say yes)

Yes Monte, we use tablets in our shop to carry around and do inspections with. If you are going to be mobile with it, you need to make sure that you have good wifi coverage, before we updated our wifi we had a lot of trouble with corrupting records when they'd be updating them walking out of wifi range and losing connections.

Aaaand if you do have ethernet cables in a room and are worried about wifi signal.  Docking stations I have a Microsoft Surface Laptop.  If I'm upstairs I will Wifi or Docking Station it. If I'm downstairs I'm crossing my fingers.

Yep. I even run Access on my Android tablet and phone using Chrome Remote Desktop to my office PC.

Don't have to worry about corrupting the database if the Wifi kicks out... you just won't get an updated screen, or it won't receive your click/typing.
