Converting Date Format

Hi Richard,
I just have a question out of curiosity. I import Amazon Kindle Data XML to get a list of books that I have. It's far from perfect believe me. If fields for dates come in with all those numbers and such that are never needed, is there a way of formatting that XML file to show the proper date? Or if this is something you are planning on covering in future classes let me know too. Thanks, Ken

you can just remove them yourself with an update query and DateValue() DateValue

Not sure if this is something that can or needs to be done in Excel before of after in Access

Thanks Adam, I go back to that lesson and see how to do that.

That's not a date format that Access recognizes, but all you really need to do is some string manipulation. Pull out the left X characters and the mid Y characters for the date and time, and then CDate it. If you care about the time zone info, add that many hours to it. This would actually make a cool video. I'll add it to the list.

Thanks, Richard, Sorry for the late response. I've been without internet the past two days and am finally up and running. I look forward to that video too. Ken

Got the steps for the video all set. Going to show the basics in a free TechHelp video, then in the extended cut I'm going to show how to deal with the time zone data on the end. Should be able to record it tomorrow.

Hi Richard, I clicked on the hyperlink in your message but it went to a Coming Soon page. Is there something there that I need to look for?

Oh crap. I didn't realize you're not a TechHelp member. I'm giving you a complimentary one week Silver membership so you can watch it. It's queued for public release on June 17th, but I won't torture you and make you wait. Hopefully this will show you the value of a Silver membership too! :)

Hi Ken!  Your original statement of "importing Kindle data" has intrigued me.  Are you getting your Kindle data from the KindleSyncMetadataCache.xml file (Kindle for PC app)?  Or from another source?  I've got "thousands" of Kindle eBooks.  I would like to put their metadata into an Access db.  It may even be the start of a my personal Library Management System db since I also have "thousands" of hardback and paperback books.

Hello Sam. Yes I am getting them from the Kindle app cache. Only lately it is not so easy because the kindle app is not opening but to just a white page. Shame is no one on tech at Amazon can tell me why or how to fix it.
