Access in the Movies
Richard Rost

Microsoft Access has made appearances in popular media. For example, in the 1996 movie Twister, Access is seen being used to track weather data. It's a fun nod to how widespread and versatile Access has been.

I did a quick Google search to try to find a screen shot, but alas, I couldn't locate one (in all of about 5 minutes of searching). Anyone got it? LOL

UPDATE: turns out this may not be true. ChatGPT pulled a fast one on me.

I don't want to have to watch that awful movie AGAIN to find a screen shot. LOL. Someone's gotta have one.

Although it might be fun to watch that cow flying across the screen again...

RIP Bill Paxton. The only actor to have been killed by an Alien, a Predator, and a Terminator. :)

I must admit I've never seen the movie (just ordered it from Amazon). If I see the scene I'll get a screenshot and post it here.

I saw it in theaters back when it first came out. Let's see, in 1996 I was likely 24, so I may not have appreciated it, but from what I remember, it was god awful. LOL.

Twisters is scheduled to be released internationally by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 17, 2024, and in the United States by Universal Pictures on July 19, 2024.

I own the movie so I've seen it quite a few times, and I don't remember seeing any Access applications on any computer screens.  The screenshots below show the weather application used by the protagonists, and it appears several times in the movie.  But it is clearly just made-up computer graphics.

An app like this could be made with Access, I suppose.  But there isn't any tell-tale indication in the pictures whatsoever that this is an Access application.

I knew as soon as I mentioned a movie both Kevins would get involved. LOL.

Yeah, that doesn't look like Access specifically. I wonder if my source is wrong! And my source, of course, is ChatGPT...

So I guess this just goes to prove that you have to take everything ChatGPT gives you with a grain of salt.

I promise from now on to verify EVERYTHING that GPT tells me from an independent source before I mention it in one of my videos or even one of these silly Access Trivia of the Day things that I decided to start doing.

I'm embarrassed that I took GPT at its word when I know for a fact that it makes things up!

ChatGPT often uses "fuzzy logic" and gives fuzzy answers.  Sometimes fuzzy answers are fine, but sometimes we need exact factual logic and answers.

Even if there were an Access application screen, we probably wouldn't recognize it because an Access app often looks like any other Windows app.  We need to see the tell-tale signs of Access to know for sure, such as the flash screen, the ribbon, the .accdb extension, etc., but they are not always on the screen.

You are correct, sir. :)
