Access 2010, Beginner, have watched levels 1-3. I'm setting up a database for students and will need to sort by: K, 1, 2,...9, 10, etc. (in this order). Is there a custom sort that I be able to set up?

Also, I understand the reason for the auto number. I will be using family account numbers (that will not be duplicated or changed). Should I still set up an auto number?

I would add a GradeLevel field to your table. Use that for your sorting. I would just enter Kindergarten as a 0.

Yes, even if you have your own account number (or product number, vendor ID, etc.) you should still include an AutoNumber in each table. Later on, Access will use these AutoNumbers for relating tables together. It's OK to have YOUR ID with an AutoNumber too.
