My Access Retraining
Robert Fitzgibbons

I have always had an interest in Computer programming and in fact had A minor in it in college.  Early in my career as a surgeon, I had time to build a large database which now contains almost 20,000 records, each with 21 fields. I was originally using dbase but converted to Access in the early 1990s. There are numerous relational tables which contain items such as hospital I was working in, CPT codes which point to the specific operation performed, assistant surgeon, length of the surgery etc.  As my practice grew, I became far too busy to work with the files and my access skills have lapsed.   Fortunately, my office staff religiously continue to enter the data.  I retired august first 2024 so now have time to work with the data, writing papers and helping my younger colleagues keep tract of their data among other projects.  Although I am retired I still have my university compute as an emeritus professor. The bad news is that the computer's' operating system is controlled by our IT department and therefore I am locked into Windows10. I have been listening to my previous courses to try to get back up to speed and this has brought back pleasant memories about Mr. Ross's light, pleasant even humorous style. Amazing how he can so concisely boil this complex subject down.  Sorry for the longwinded introduction but my question is there IS any value to upgrading my existing access 101-103, 204,2010- beginner 1-9 and expert 1-2 to amore current version? If so how expensive would that be.  I seem to be doing just fine with the old courses.  Thanks in advance. Bob

Hi Robert, thank you for the compliments. I see you started with my lessons back in 2011, so that's quite a while. Welcome back.

I would skip the older Access 101, 102, and 103 classes that you have. Those are pretty old. I just made sure that you have all of the latest Access beginner lessons, and you have Expert one and two, so those are still just fine.

I haven't recorded those yet, but 99% of the material is exactly the same. There are some minor changes, like they call Memo Fields Long Text Fields now, but I mentioned that in the newer Beginner one and two videos. Those are always good to review if you've been away for a while.

Be sure to check the notes on each course's page down below because I put any important changes or updates there. It's easier to pack some notes on than it is to re-record the video. But most of it's exactly the same, and if you do decide to continue where you left off, Access Expert 3 would be the next one for you.

Thank you so much.  I can't believe you have the time to do this yourself

As far as my courses go, this has been something I've been working on and building for 20 some years now, so you do a little bit every day and over decades it turns into something great. As far as the website goes, I don't have the time to do this myself. I rely very heavily on my moderators and they do a fantastic job of helping everyone when I don't have the time to.
