Database Locking
Justin Langdon

I have a shared directory on my company directory. In this directory, I have an Access database. I have created a shortcut to the database on the user's desktop.

For the past year, all the user had to do was click the icon and the database opened. However, about two weeks ago, something changed. Now if the user clicks the shortcut, it will open the database, but when they close the database, the 'temp database' stays open (the one with the lock on it). Going forward, anyone who tries to open the file gets an error message indicating that someone else is still in the database.

Only way to fix it is to reboot the computer (according to my IT dept). They also say that users do have read/write access to the directory. So, I'm thinking it's something else.

Could really use some help on this.

Is your data base split? See Split Your Database

Are all the users opening the same Accdb or Accde folder on your shred folder? if So, that is a big No No.

Do you have the latest updates?  Reason I ask is a recent update has a tendency at least for me to not close correctly.  Leaves a lock behind.  And per Windows task manager it's still running.  Make sure you have no instances of Access running and delete the locks.

If these things are happening roll the update back to a more stable version.  Don't recall the video. Microsoft is aware of the issue and a fix is being done as we type this. (I hope).
