Are there differences between splitting a data base and connecting to an external database?

In general, that is the same thing. You can however link to other external sources that are not a relational database. A split database usually starts by Splitting your data into from your frontend. That where the name comes from.

Thanks. I thought one of the differences would be that the split database should automatically save new tables in the BE database, but it does not.
