In Search of Some Info
Jerry Fowler

For sometime I have been working on a database to track Rick's TechHelp videos, Quick Queries, and other whatnots. I am able to strip info from his website to come up with most of the info, suchas; Video name, publish date the image that is associated with the video, keywords, url to get to the videos on his site. I'm able to save the quizes he has and can bring them up after I watch the video. There is tho' 2 pieces of info I'm having difficulty getting besides the url to get to the video on his site I've been tracking the youtube url as well, then the other is if the video is for a beginner, expert, or developer. if you have come across this info on his site, would you please share. I do not, I repeat I do not expect Rick or any of his helpers to start adding this info. They do quite enough. I'm thinking even if there is a way to strip that from the image associated with the video, that has the info on there.  Any help would be great.  I'll attach a screen shot of one of the forms to show you what I track

I'k guessing this question will come up. Yes I do track if there is an extended cut, but, I do not track any info such as url or a copy of the video. I only have a check if there is one.

I think you're database looks awesome.  Excellent work.

I'm not sure what your first question is.

As for your second question... I don't think you can assign (Beginner, Expert or Developer) to every video as they're not always targeted in my opinion.

I tend to view them in the following categories:
- Beginner
- Advanced
- Expert
- Developer
- Tech Help
- ABCD
- Seminar
- Template
- Code Vault

I can see you have a search button, so that should be very helpful if you need to find a topic.

I would also suggest...

As opposed to making a checkbox for the video type... make that into a Combo Box that you can edit.

That way if Rick ever decides to add a new topic... or if you want to modify this database to conform to another database, it will be much easier.

I surprised that Richard doesn't already have a similar database. Finding topics through web pages isn't easy.

Since this is more of a single list item, I just enter the information in to excel. Like:  TechHelp - Median and in the next column: URL.  The third column is for Notes:

If I ever want it a DB I will just import it.

Right now, this is working for me.

Raymond, if you'll notice on Rick's intro slide, he usually marks them for Beginner, Expert, or Developer. Occasionally, he will have more than one, that's where I currently check the box(es) after I've imported the data. All of it is done by clicking on the import button. I only had 2 questions, where I might be able to scrub his site for the classification of the class, and where I might be able to scrub to get the YouTube URL for the video, until then I just copy and paste the URL.

Hello All

Jerry Fowler: I just finished making a program to extract all of the titles and URLs from YouTube.
Thats 2100 video's on YouTube, never be able to watch them all lol.

I'm only using excel, just so I can track of all the videos I've watched and other info I can add for a reference.
It makes it so much easier to find what's available.
I looked into thumbnails, couldn't find an easy way to import them, and it would be best to ask Richard first?

Your database look awesome :)

Has anyone written on OCR lib in VBA?
You could try and search for words on the thumbnail.

Is the YouTube url not in the webpage source?

Alex, I've tried several OCRs, one for jpg images and one for pdf, but neither would pull the wording other than the title of the video. On the URL do you know which page that the YouTube might be on? I haven't found one.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Jerry - First of all, I'm flattered that you've taken the time to put a database like this together. It looks awesome! I actually do have something I use internally when I'm building courses and TechHelp videos, but it's really just to help me assemble the content. Once a video is published, I archive it and move on. I don't usually keep metadata like the level (Beginner, Expert, Developer), extended cuts, etc. I just put that info in the video itself.

So if you're trying to track that, the best way might be to use the transcript I publish with each video. You could run it through something like ChatGPT and ask it, "What level is this video?" That would probably be a lot easier and more accurate than trying to OCR it off the thumbnail.

Either way, I'm seriously impressed with the work you've done. You're probably tracking things better than I do!

You are the one who has gotten me this far. When I discovered your channel on YouTube about four years ago, I had just retired from a university position in IT, where I wrote programs against their SQL student database. I knew nothing about Access except that it came with Office, and I had never written a line of VBA code. Today, I have written several databases for community services in my area. Your teaching style is like I have you in my living room teaching me. I'm so glad to be a member, and it's worth every penny.

Jerry Youtube has a playlist page for the groups of videos.  The url's and titles are in the source.  You may be able to parse them out of there and then match up to the titles in your db.

Richard I can pull everything by scrubbing your website, except for the level and YouTube URL. Basically a one (or two) clickprocess,

Matt Great idea, I will play with that and see what I come up with, would you know of any info on attempting something like this?

Jerry When I have done work like that I save the file as text file and use the material from Developer 30 to manipulate the text.

Yeah, the only time I care about the YouTube URL is when I do an extended cut. Because then on YouTube in the description I put links to both videos back and forth. But on my website I don't really track it.

I'm not really why I do, except I started doing it. I'm about to decide to drop it.

After exploring the YouTube API v3, I successfully enabled it and wrote a small function that retrieved the 5 most recent videos. Then, by matching on the published date, I was able to match the YouTube URL and fill in that blank. Almost there. I would like to thank everyone for their suggestions.
