Taking Pictures From Inside an Access Application
Jim Thompson

I'm building a system that needs to include a photo along with other information on a workorder.   I've found a couple of activex controls, specifically AccessImagine and dbpix but they create OLE objects rather than take external photos.   I'm somewhat sensitive to storing these large objects in the database.  Do you know of a way to take photos from within an access app but store them externally, or, of a way to export the OLE object.   Many thanks.

Are the images just stored in a folder on your machine?

You might also check out the Open Programs Seminar.

If you want it to appear more integrated with the database,  you can check the command line switch options for your camera control software.  If they don't offer the options that you need, then you can start exploring other compatible software with the command line switch options that you desire.

Alex Thanks Alex, the issue im wrestling with is how to take the picture from within an app, not storing it.   The ActiveX controls Ive found so far store OLE data in the database, I would prefer the technique used in IMAGES but its about the camera...

What kind of camera is it?  Are you talking about an SLR or webcam?

But as Matt said it would be good to know which app or device you are trying to retrieve the images from.

If you have an ActiveX control that saves the image as an OLE object, you could just then export the OLE object to a regular file, delete the OLE object, and then store the file properly.

Jim I understand you want to create the image from within Access. If there is only one user to the db, that makes sense. But if there will be more users, it might become a bit of a nightmare to integrate all the different photo taking equipment, including replacements in the future. A more open approach is to capture the image externally (however & wherever) and place it into one folder dedicated to that table.

In my forms, I allow a {option ctrl, or shft} double-click on the form's image control to open, with windows explorer, the folder on the image server (it could be on my local drive for a 1 user system). Then I just rename to image to the ID of the record. Multiple images could get a little trickier. Later, a double click opens the image from the Access form. I follow the same approach for Windows files that aren't just images.

Thanks to all that have commented.

To answer all the questions - webcam, one device (one user at a time) .

The application creates a work ticket in a ceramics studio with directions on firing an object.   The application runs on a tablet (surface) and creates the work order with firing instructions and a picture of the item to be fired to aid the kiln operator.

The users of the system are potters, not computer folks so the fewer steps the better.

I'm currently evaluating accessimagine, but am also looking at ffmpg as potential solutions

It appears that I can store the images "off board" using AcccessImagine so I might end up there.

Would love to hear from folks with experience using AccessImagine, FFMPG .

Thanks

So you are taking an image via a webcam attached to a PC or Tablet?
Which model webcam is it?
Are you just using the webcam as a mechanism to take a picture, it's not used for video?
