Access Intro

I am a process-oriented professional with a background in programming and accounting. In 1992, I started a business helping companies leverage Microsoft Windows and Office to improve their operations. At the time, many businesses were just beginning to digitize; I would physically bring in the computers, install Office and QuickBooks, and configure everything to meet their specific needs.

I quickly realized that these businesses required specialized software to handle their unique workflows. I initially experimented with the database in Microsoft Works, but found it lacked the necessary flexibility and scalability. When I discovered Microsoft Access 2.0, I was encouraged by its potential. I bought a training book - which I still keep today - and dove in. Within weeks, I had built my first product pricing database for a carpet reseller, utilizing custom VBA functions.

Access was a game-changer. Its ease of use allowed me to develop custom software rapidly and affordably, leading to a steady stream of referrals. In 1995, one of my clients offered me a full-time position. I agreed, on the condition that I would have the right of first refusal to buy the company when the owner retired. During my tenure, I built a comprehensive production database covering sales, customer service, A/R, and purchasing.

I eventually purchased the company in 2005. To this day, we still use that original 1995 database - continuously improved over the years. My membership in this community further accelerated its development, "putting the database on steroids." Microsoft Access made my career fun, productive, and financially rewarding.

Prior to Microsoft Works and Access, I bought Paradox and a book. Some of it was useful but programming was much more cumbersome. I eventually gave up and kept looking until I found Access. It did not take long to realize Access made EVERYTHING possible and at relative ease. 30 years later, I still use and program my Access databases daily. I am on Access Learning zone daily too.
