Access Introduction
Matt Hall

In 2012, I was asked to assist the maintenance team in an ethanol plant that had been built and "started" without commissioning.  In their first 6 months, their record run was 6 hours before crashing.  As a result, I got to learn a lot about that plant.

9 months later, I was tapped to start up their identical sister plant that had never run.  It had to be running in 90 days.  I immediately realized that we would need to commission the plant before trying to run.  They had no Instrument loop diagrams, which we would need for commissioning, as the engineering firm had not produced any.  I only had an instrument index (list), in a .pdf file.

I built a basic database, working in tables, imported the data that I did have, and collected the rest from the field.  I then made template drawings in reports.  I printed the reports to a .pdf document and those were our loop diagrams for commissioning.  For 2 months, I worked 7-12's at the plant and went back to the motel to develop the database to generate the 1400-ish drawings that I knew we had to have for commissioning.

I had data-entry experience with Access and didn't really understand its potential.  I had significant experience in Excel and used that to import and scrub the .pdf data for import into access.  That experience demonstrated the power of Access.

In 2021, I took on a role that afforded me the opportunity to inherit a struggling database and carry on with its development.  I found your videos shortly after, while working to salvage that database.  Your Images seminar was exactly what I needed.  I can testify about the impact of attachments in an Access database - Super Evil.

Thank-You for all you have done for me,
Matt
