My Start with Access
Chris Tyson

It all started about 3 years ago when I broke Google.  I hit the wall, I didn't realize that was possible.  I had a BIG spreadsheet that I used Vlookups and Imortranges on to fill in other forms we needed.  That's where the limit comes in with the importrange.  Anyway, at 60 years old I needed to try to find a solution to fix this problem.  A girl in the office said to use Access to create a database to track everything.  She tried to get me to use Access 5 or so years earlier, but I just couldn't see the use for it.  Man, I wish i would have seen the light back then.  I found Richard and started with the Beginners lessons while doing what he told beginners not to and start a major project before getting to at least the Expert level.  I worked on the solution for about a year until we found an online software that would help us out, but I kept learning, and put the project on the back burner.  In the meantime I used Access for a couple other tracking needs.  About a 1.5 years later we decided to "upgrade" to QuickBooks Online from QB Desktop, big mistake, and we lost a lot of functionality.  Went to back burner and resurrected that database to track what QuickBooks Online can't.  Been working on it since.  Coming along, but still has some tweaks that need working on.  We've almost gotten away from Google and depend on this database for so much now.  It's so rewarding to have someone in the office say I need this or that and then go and make it happen!

Chris, thanks for sharing your story, I love hearing how people find their way to Access. That "I broke Google" moment is great, because that's exactly where spreadsheets start to hit their limits and a real database shines. Sounds like you stuck with it the right way too, learning as you went and coming back to improve things over time. That's exactly how most solid Access solutions are built.

And yeah, you're definitely not alone on QuickBooks Online. I've heard from a lot of people who made that switch and ended up frustrated with the loss of functionality compared to Desktop. It's nice that you were able to fall back on your Access database and keep building something that actually fits your needs.

Really appreciate you sharing this. Stories like this are exactly why I made that video.
