Update My Client Table
Chuck Corvec

SO I goofed. BUT, I saved my butt

I modified my Client table (Client_tbl)so it does not contain address info. That is in a subtable because there can be multiple addresses for the same client. All was well and worked great

I then deleted the fields from my Client table I no longer needed. However I deleted thre fields by mistale HomePhone, CellPhone, WorkPhone and emailaddress. Ok thats four. They were not supposed to be deleted, I did back up my table befor ethe changes and stiil have that data in ClientsBackup_tbl

I want to import the valuse in those four fileds from ClienTBackup_tbl to Client_tbl
They both have a field MemberID that is the same in both. Is this an update query or an append query. What would it look like

Append creates a completely new record, update updates existing records.

You'd have to re-create the deleted fields in the table definition for the main table that your rebuilding.

If you want to use the QBE to visually build the update, open the QBE and bring in the table you are updating.

Add the 4 fields you need to update to the grid by double-clicking each

Change the query type to Update

Bring your backup table in at the top and make sure that a join is created on the MemberID field

In the lower grid, for each field, in the "Update To" row, enter [ClientBackup_tbl].[FIELDNAME]

replace each fieldname appropriately.

2 Other methods:

1, make another backup of your current client table and then delete the original. make a copy of the original ClientsBackup_tbl and rename it Client_tbl. Then, delete only the fields you intended to delete. Using this method you may need to re-establish global .relationships

2, Instead of the QBE, open the Query Editor in SQL view and manually enter the needed SQL which would look something like:

Click for SQL SampleUPDATE Client_tbl
INNER JOIN ClientBackup_tbl ON Client_tbl.MemberID = ClientBackup_tbl.MemberID
SET
    Client_tbl.FIELDNAME= ClientBackup_tbl.FIELDNAME

Add a comma and duplicate the fieldname line for each necessary field. After the last field, Access may add a semi-colon, that's fine.
