Importing records
Gary Smith

Hi Richard,

After using Excel for many years I now record my business invoices in Access thanks to your tech help videos.

I started my Access Autonumber InvoiceID from #462 using this query:

ALTER TABLE [InvoiceT]
ALTER COLUMN [InvoiceID] COUNTER (462,1)

Is it possible to now import my old Excel Invoice data from Excel and put it into access before that number ? ie Invoices #1 - 461 ?

Thanks Gary.

Wow this question hasn't surfaced in a while...
Here is a word of caution:
The auto number field is a field for ACCESS to use,  NOT YOU.
See the   Auto Numbers Good or Bad video.

The best solution would be to create your own Number field that you and the customer see and use and leave the InvoiceID field alone.  This is explained better here:  Custom Sequential Number

As a last resort check out the Restore Deleted Autonumber video.
Go all the way to the bottom first and read Richards Post about the video.

^ What Scott said. :)

Autonumbers are not for YOU. They're for Access to make RELATIONSHIPS. That's it. If you care about those numbers, put them in a secondary field for YOU.
