Criteria (according to your techhelp parameter Query. Why is access replacing what I typed in?
What I typed
Like * & [Last Name Search] & *
As soon as I tab off the criteria line or sve the Query
Access is replacing to look like this adding the A in front of Like
ALike * & [Last Name Search] & *
I run query and the parameter opens Last Nme Serach I type in he letter m and say ok the query returns only the record to add a new record. I have about 10 records where there is an m in the LastName I am using access2019. I am PUZZLED why the a keeps going in front of like

Your database is set to ANSI 92 (as opposed to ANSI 89). The Wildcard character for ANSI 92 is "%".

Can I change my database to ansi 89?

To test this I copied one of my databases to change the setting and now the checkbox is disabled. I would create a new database file and import all the objects in to that. To check the setting: `File -- Options -- Object Designers =- Query Design`

Thanks that was the solution. Do you know is one better than the other?or is it a county/region thing I also tested and found you must lso uncheck the box for default for new databases to maintain the ansi89

Only use ANSI 92 if you're going to be doing a lot of work with SQL Server.
