Illegal software

Regarding illegal software mentioned in your video "Download Access for Free?", another reason people use it is that they may not even know they are using software illegally.  In the early days (1990s and before), software came on floppy discs, CD-ROMs, and the likes.  They had next to no copy protection to speak of, and they could be used to re-install the software over and over again, on different machines.  And THAT was a violation of usage terms (and the law).  Since everyone was doing it, most didn't even know it was against the law.  Software came with a tiny paper with the EULA which no one read.  And the industry had no way to "force" users to install only one copy (or the correct licensed amount of copies).  As recently as 2010s, Microsoft Office could be installed an infinite number of times on multiple PCs if 120 days had passed after the previous installation.  Those who still have Office 97-2007 CD-ROMs or older can verify this.  There must have been tons of illegal users back then.  And Microsoft couldn't possibly sue them all.

The "game changer" was the death of physical media.  Nowadays you get the software not from a disc, but from a cloud-based activation system.  If you don't have the necessary license, you can't even download it online.  Software piracy, at least a big chunk of it, was removed practically overnight.  This has also helped reduce piracy of movies and video games too.

Oh, sure, I remember those days. In fact, when I used to be an IT guy myself, I've gone into several companies where I can clearly see that they bought one copy of Office and were passing the disk around, installing it on all 30 or 40 machines or whatever they had. Probably downloaded and burned it at home and wrote the CD key on the disc with a sharpie. They didn't care. I told more than a couple of them that, you know, you could get in a lot of trouble for doing this, right, especially if you have a disgruntled employee. That's how Microsoft used to find out about companies doing that. You piss off Joe from accounting, and guess what? He's gonna blow you in. LOL
