SQL Server based Form slow Combo
Sami Shamma

Greeting friends,

I have moved my db to SQL Server. My main Form EntityF (yes, this is based on the ABCD) loads exceedingly slowly. you can actually see the controls being painted on the screen.

I stated debugging it and it turned out to be the combo boxes. Nothing major looking up value from Helper type tables with very few records.

When I remove the combo boxes the speed is normal.

Has anyone experienced this with SQL Server backend. I have a winhost dedicated server. other forms run normal speed.

Thank you for your insights.

How many records are in the helper table?

Are you using a view (or query) to retrieve that data for a specific combo?

One of the tables has 6 records UserT, HelperT has about 85 records. My record source selects from the table directly

Hi Richard,

I know you have a setup similar to what I just did, Dedicated SQL Server on Winhost with Access 365 frontend.

Combo boxes are exceedingly slow even when the recordsource has less than 10 records in the table.
It gets worse of if there are multiple combo boxes on the form (Single or Continues).

Do you experience the same issue?

To make sure it is not something else, I created a very simple form and stated adding Combo boxes. It slows after the second box and crawls after the third.

Many Thanks

Hi Richard, thank you for the advice on this.

I wrote one View (on the Server) that brings back three records from one table.
I also wrote one PassThru query that filters Helper table and brings back 6 records.

Re introduced the two combo boxes now based on the above, and the load speed of the form became very very slow, you can see the controls being painted.

Any further advice?

Thanks

I'll see if I can recreate your issue. Give me a few days. Mom's here visiting.

OK, so I just tested what you've described. I have an Access database with linked tables to SQL Server. I created three combo boxes on my CustomerF form that pull in values from other tables. One table has 80,000 records in it. The second has 88,000. The third has 4,000. I've noticed NO slowdown at all. Form loads quick. Combo boxes pop open quick.

I initially tried with NO sorting, as I figured that would slow things down, but then I added an ORDER BY to the 2nd combo (with 88k records) and it still loaded pretty quick. I was going to say make sure that you are pulling data from sorted Views on the SQL Server if you need them sorted (so Access doesn't have to do the sorting). Remember, you can link a table to a View, too.

So as of right now, I can't seem to reproduce the problem you're having. Need more details.

Thank you Richard
I hope your mom is enjoying her time in FL.

I will continue to dig and see if I can isolate the problem.

Ok, I just moved my second customer db to the Same dedicated SQL server. Similar ProductF (based on ABCD EntityF) with a dozen combo boxes and it loaded super fast.

So, so far I eliminated several elements, I will keep digging

Many thanks

@Sami, figure it out yet? I would love to know what was the problem.

not yet, I have narrowed it down to potentially a problem with that instance of SQL Server.
