Intro In this video, I will show you a quick and easy way to stop labels from automatically resizing when you change their captions in Microsoft Access forms. We will look at how editing the caption directly on the form causes unwanted resizing, and the simple solution of using the property sheet to keep your label size exactly how you want it.
Transcript Welcome to another Fast Tips video brought to you by AccessLearningZone.com. I am your instructor Richard Rost.

In this video, I'm going to show you how to prevent your labels from automatically resizing when you change the caption. This is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to form design.

You're working on a form. You go to change the label. Let's say I want to change this from "Main Menu" to just "Menu." I delete "Main," and whether I press Tab or Enter, that happens. The label automatically sizes to fit whatever text you've got in there.

Now I have to take the time. I want this to be stretched out across here, so I'm going to move those like that. Now it's back to where I want it, but that's a pain. Let me undo this. Undo, undo, undo. Okay, we're back to here.

Now, how do I get to change this caption without changing the size of the label? The trick is to use the property sheet. Click on the label, go over to the Caption property, just change this to "Menu," and then press Tab. Look at that. Your label doesn't auto-resize.

That is your Fast Tip for today. For more videos like this, visit my website AccessLearningZone.com. I'll put a link down below in the description.

Summary Today's video from Access Learning Zone focuses on how to stop your labels from automatically resizing when you change their caption in Microsoft Access form design. This is a small but persistent annoyance that often pops up when working on forms.

For example, if you have a label on your form that says "Main Menu" and you want to change it to just "Menu," you might try deleting the word "Main" and pressing Tab or Enter. Unfortunately, Access will automatically resize the label to fit the new, shorter text, which can throw off your carefully planned design. You might then spend extra time stretching the label back to the width you wanted, which can be frustrating.

However, there is a simple solution for this. Instead of editing the label text directly on the form, select the label and open its property sheet. In the property sheet, find the Caption property and change the text there to "Menu" or whatever you wish. After editing the caption in the property sheet and pressing Tab, you will notice the label does not resize automatically. The dimensions you set for the label remain intact.

That wraps up this Fast Tip. You can find a complete video tutorial with step-by-step instructions on everything discussed here on my website at the link below. Live long and prosper, my friends.
