Why I Pronounce Array Funny
Richard Rost

I just realized I promised you the story about why I sometimes pronounce "array" funny and then completely forgot to tell it. LOL.

I first learned the word "array" from a programming manual when I was teaching myself CoCo BASIC on my TRS-80 Color Computer 2. I got that computer for Christmas when I was about 8 years old. I'd never heard anyone actually SAY the word before. I only knew it from reading it in programming books, so I sounded it out in my head and that pronunciation stuck.

Years later I finally heard someone say "array" out loud, and I'm pretty sure it was on Star Trek, talking about some kind of telescope or sensor array. By then it was too late. My brain had already decided how the word was supposed to sound.

It's kind of like reading a fantasy novel and making up pronunciations for all the names in your head. Then years later you see the movie and think, "Ohhh... THAT'S how you pronounce Aragorn."

Students have been picking on me about my pronunciation of "array" for years. At this point you'll sometimes hear me say it the normal way and sometimes my old childhood-programmer way. My brain apparently has both versions installed and randomly decides which one to load.

So there you go. That's the array story I promised and then forgot to tell you in the video. :)
