Can I adjust the settings of the grid somewhere by default instead of always having to adjust them

There isn't a "global" setting that you can set anywhere.
One work around that you could use would be to set up a form like in the Blank Template and change the settings for the Grid X and Grid Y properties for the form.
When you need to make a new form just use your 'default form' make a copy of it.
