Sorting Complicates lists

Hello, I Need to create a table for checklist steps. the way the steps would be numbered are for example: 1; 1.1; 1.1.1; 1.2; 1.3; 1.3.1; 1.3.2; 2; 2.1 so like a contract for example, the list consists of a heading, with sections, that could have sub sections.. potentially to 3 or 4 decimal places. How can access sort this info given that it cant use more than one decimal place ? I guess if you needed to sort a list of IP addresses it would be the same. I would add that we haven't created these lists yet so if there is a better way to number them then we can do that.

Start with 2 tables main heading and second table subheading.  use Subforms  and to do a report use  Grouping or Groups.  I hope this may point you in the right direction.

with this method.. wouldn't I need Multiple levels of nested subforms? would it still be possible to import the lists from excel ?

Have you tried storing those values as text?

Kevin is correct.  Once you move past the second level (the second decimal) you are no longer using a number you are creating a "code" for your level.  Thus it becomes a Short Text field.
The litmus test: I always ask myself is will I ever need to use math on that field?  If yes - it is a Number.  If no - Text.

Using your IP address example, you would never add up two IPs. Even though they are numbers they are just a "code" for that address.

Thanks all, I had not considdered just storing as text... such an obvious solution now that you've said it..
