When using the Append Only field property on multiple columns, does it "bog down" the database in large applications?

Can you expand on your question some? I'm not quite sure what you are speaking about when you say "Append Only" field property.
You might need to show us a screen shot.

Scott Append Only is a property in the table for Long Text fields.
